"I Just Wondered How You Got Started Writing?"Tips In Your Pursuit Of A Writing Career Learning Even More

Learning more? You have attended school your whole young life, you might say, with many of you having college to boot. If you have been reading these weekly articles on pursuing a writing career you have also taken some writing classes, joined a writing group and are reading.  Is there yet more?

As a writer, learning is a must if we are to continue to improve upon our skills.  There are two main ways to learn; through experience and through study or schooling.  First, experience or experiences teach us much that can provide rich reservoirs to Write from. Our best writing will always stem from first hand experience rather than second hand information.  For instance, a trip to Italy could birth a travel guide, booklet of local plants or restaurants or a mystery novel featuring vineyards.  The experience of being there can give us new material to store for use now or in the future.

How do we learn through experience?  One way is to use the five senses; seeing, hearing, smelling, touching and tasting.  Whether you are at a park, the dollar store or a foreign country, open your eyes.  Don't hurry through with your focus on your to do list but take in the location through your senses.  Study your surroundings and let them soak into your imagination.  Listen to the sounds around you; let the local smells stir a story that will have people literally feeling like they are there when they read that story.  Take time to feel the environment around you, the textures, softness and roughness of items to describe to your readers.  Taste local foods when in a foreign country or just something different at the local grocery story to give a twist to the normal.

As far as classes or studies, one class that can always help writers is a computer class.  Unless you have a computer degree, there are always new shortcuts and programs out there to make writing easier and make you more productive.  There are also community education classes that can give you new writing material, from exercise to crafts to educational classes; a place where you can meet new people and again broaden your experiences and those five senses.  The library is a smorgasbord of books, ideas and activities guaranteed to stir a writer's imagination.

Learning is an adventure of a lifetime; a journey that leads a writer to a deeper richer vocabulary and more story lines to draw from for better writing.  Next week we will discuss the positives of getting to know your local library...
