You’re up for a promotion or you’re looking for a new job. You want to get a higher salary but you don’t know how to negotiate for the salary you want. To negotiate a higher salary, you have to have bargaining chips. Evaluate your position, your strengths, your skills and your experience.
First, you’re going to have to do some homework.
Research your profession. Does your job require certain skills? Are the required skills analytical or creative? The answers to these questions will help you understand the core traits that are needed in your profession. If you’re an accountant, it’s not necessary to have Creative Writing skills. You’ll want to cultivate your math and problem-solving skills instead.
Also research your work setting. Are you in the office all day or does your job require you to have a certain amount of physical strength? Maybe your work takes place in an office environment. Are you using a computer most of the day? If so, what kind of computer skills do you need?
Everyone who works in an office environment should cultivate their basic computer skills. Knowing how to quickly access databases, search for files, use your email program and search the Internet will come in handy when you’re asked to check on something in a short amount of time.
Check to see what other types of computer skills you need. There could be a few specific programs that you use every day. Know which programs you need and how efficiently you use those programs. If you find that you need some help or you would like to advance your knowledge, then think about taking some classes.
Furthering your education is always a smart endeavor. Today’s schools understand the need for professionals to keep learning. Many schools offer a wide selection of night classes to accommodate working individuals. There are even weekend programs to achieve an advanced degree. If none of these options work for you, online education might fit the bill.
Aside from education, experience is also a big factor when trying to get the salary you want. Evaluate your present job and your past positions. What skills have you developed from all your past duties? You may be better-rounded than you think.
So now you have the basic traits your employer desires, you’ve taken classes to advance your knowledge, and you also have a wealth of experience. There’s no reason for you not to get the salary you want. Unless your asking salary is much too high for your profession.
Research the salary range of your position and make sure your desired salary isn’t way beyond the norm. If your goal is reasonable but you are still being refused, try another company. Sometimes a company lacks the funds to accommodate your salary goal. If that’s the case, try a different company that’s larger or more established.
Don’t feel stuck. There are always options out there for you. If you have the skills, education and experience, you will achieve the salary you want.
