Steps to Write new Partition Boot Sector
Each hard disk partition is assigned with an individual partition boot sector. It is also referred as volume boot record or volume boot sector. This structure contains all the vital information that the file system requires to access the partition/volume.On x86-based computers, the hard disk MBR (Master Boot Record) uses the partition boot sector of system partition to start the operating system. But, the partition boot sector can get damaged due to factors, like virus infection or system reconfiguration. Consequently, the system may fail to boot, rendering your data inaccessible. The ideal solution to this problem is to write a new partition boot sector. But if this fails, using a backup or a partition recovery utility is the last option.
You can write a new partition boot sector in Windows XP by using a Recovery Console command – fixboot. To do so, you need to follow these steps:

Start Windows XP Recovery Console: Insert the Windows XP installation CD and boot your computer from it. Press any key when to boot from the CD. When the Setup screen appears, press the designated key (usually 'R') to enter the Recovery Console. The Recovery Console is a Windows XP troubleshooting program that provides different options to solve boot-related issues.

Access Command line: Select the Windows installation you want to repair and specify the administrator password (if any or press Enter). The command line interface appears.

Use Fixboot: Type fixboot at the command prompt and press Enter. This command rewrites the partition boot sector for the selected system partition. Any corruption that the partition boot sector has and was preventing Windows XP from boot is removed.

Exit and Eject the CD: Once the fixboot command completes rewriting the boot sector, you need to type exit to exit the Recovery Console and take out the CD from the drive.
Restart the computer to see if the problem still exists. If it is, you should restore from the last backup after reinstalling Windows.
