How To Write A Free Verse Poem
Have you ever been through a sad break up with someone you really love? If you have then you may well have written a poem or what we could call a heartbroken poem, many people write these for all sorts of sad events in their lives – such as the loss of a close family member or pet or maybe even when they have had to move away from their friends, but nothing seems to inspire the writing of poetry more than a relationship break up or divorce, just as in the same way nothing inspires love poetry more than being in a loving and happy relationship.
Unless you have a dream of having your poetry published one day you do not have to be good at writing poetry and you can write it any way you like – after all poetry is one of the best mediums there is for self expression. At the end of the day your heartbroken poem is purely to make you feel better and help heal the wounds from the pain of your break up and that means you don’t have to understand all the correct terms or conventions such as rhyme or free verse and neither should you have had to read any other really good poem first.
You really should not worry about how good or bad your poem is – after all it is just for you to read and no one else, write down your feelings no matter how tough that is and just write in plain language – the key thing with this is that you are facing the pain of the break up and in order to move forward you need to face and feel that pain for a while.
So write like you talk and still all the line breaks in that you want! – remember it is just for you to read and as long as you understand it then it is all OK – don’t try and be a Keats or anyone else – I have even written just a massive paragraph of words which make no sense to anyone other than me
So make sure you get all things down – every element of the pain and whilst this will undoubtedly be a very painful and emotional time for you, don’t stop writing your heartbroken poem – just let the pain out and this will start to enable you to move on.
OK so what if you want to share your poem? – well go ahead if it feels right and will help with the healing process – share it with who you want – maybe friends or family or even online if you don’t want to share it with anyone you know and of course by sharing it online you do not need to reveal who you really are. Sharing the poem can really help – especially online – as without doubt there will be other people sharing similar experiences and by sharing both of your thoughts you can maybe help each other.
